Macallan Insurance Broker: the insurance broker we recommend in Pattaya
Nobody moves to Thailand to think about insurance. It usually comes up later, and at a bad moment: a hospital asking how you intend to pay, or a phone call about a leak in a condo you own on the other side of the world. I would rather our tenants and landlords sorted it out in a quiet week. When they ask who to speak to about health or home insurance in Pattaya, I give them one name: Macallan Insurance Broker.
Why this one is personal
Macallan Insurance Broker is run by Jack Levy, its Managing Director. Jack has been a friend for over fifteen years.
My whole family has its health insurance through his company. That is the plainest endorsement I can give. It is one thing to recommend a business to a client. It is another to trust it with your own family.
I have also made a claim myself, and it went well. That matters more than anything else on this page. Every insurer is pleasant when you are paying the premium. You find out what you really bought on the day you need it, and on that day I was looked after.
Nobody has paid for this article, and we take no commission for sending you there.
Why a broker, and why this one
A broker works for you, not for one insurance company. An agent sells one company's policies. A broker looks across the market and tells you which cover suits your situation. For a foreigner in Thailand, where the policies are unfamiliar and the small print is not always in your first language, that is worth having.
Jack has spent his working life in insurance. He joined the industry in Scotland in 1981. There is very little he has not seen before.
They are licensed. Macallan is licensed and supervised by Thailand's Office of Insurance Commission, the government regulator.
They help when you claim. By their own account, their staff will come to a hospital, a police station or your home to help with a claim. Having someone who speaks Thai and knows the process standing next to you at that moment is the real reason to use a local broker.
What they can arrange
- Health insurance and personal accident cover.
- Home insurance, for the building and its contents.
- Car insurance.
- Travel insurance.
Who should make the call
Long-stay tenants and retirees. Medical care in Pattaya's private hospitals is good, and it is charged for. A serious illness or accident without cover can be very expensive. Some visas also come with insurance requirements. Jack's team can tell you what applies to you.
Landlords. If you own a condo or house that you rent out, ask about cover for the building, your contents and your liability if something in your unit damages a neighbour's. This matters most if you live abroad and cannot deal with a problem in person.
Tenants. Your landlord's policy will not normally cover your own belongings. It is worth asking what it costs to insure them.
New owners. The right time to arrange home insurance is the day you get the keys.
Three questions to ask any broker
- What is not covered? The exclusions tell you more than the headline.
- What happens to my premium as I get older, and can the policy be cancelled on me? This matters a great deal for health cover.
- Who do I call when I need to claim, and will someone help me in person?
